Steve Runyon

I started my CrossFit journey in 2013. I have to admit that even though I play college football I was intimated walking into a CrossFit box for the first time. I quickly found out that CrossFit fed my competitive drive and love of team sports and I never looked back. In 2015 I became CFL1 certified to share my passion and experience with others. I served in the US military for 6 years and currently work as a Director of Nursing over five primary care clinics in NWI.   In addition, I am the Assistant Football Coach at Munster High School.  I can be loud and intense at times. I love to see push their bodies to do things they didn’t think they could do anymore. CrossFit 219 has quickly become a second family to me and I am proud to be a part of this amazing community.

Emily Thompson

Growing up with a twin brother and playing all the sports, being competitive was something that came natural to me. I did track for two years in college, but then during my junior year I had to get knee surgeries which led to me having to drop from the team. I tried to go to the bro-ish globo gyms, but missed the competitiveness that came from working out with a group of people. I stumbled into my first CrossFit gym in 2016, and immediately got hooked. I went on to get my L1 in 2017 and since then have loved coaching and being a part of people’s hype team. When I’m not at the gym, I work as a barista and then I’m currently in school tackling my Masters of Social Work. I’m also obsessed with my dog named Willa.

I believe in 100% what Pat Sherwood says, “The goal is just to get fit, make it the best hour of your day, stay safe, turn up the music, high five some people, and blow off some steam. So remember that, relax, and have fun”

Coach Laura

Coach Laura is an Elementary Teacher, Level 1 Crossfit Instructor, and a Nutritional Coach. She brings 7 years of experience as a CrossFit athlete and 3 years of experience as a CrossFit coach to the gym. Laura began her CrossFit journey in 2013 when she decided she needed a change from her sedentary lifestyle. With no athletic background and having never played a sport, Laura was not sure CrossFit would be the right fit for her. She decided to give it a try and has never turned back. CrossFit quickly became an outlet that pushed Laura to new levels and allowed her to seek her personal best. Her experiences led her to not only have a passion for CrossFit, but also for overall health. As an avid athlete, Laura quickly learned that while exercise was important, it was only one piece to the puzzle. In 2018, Laura continued her education by receiving her Nutritional Coach certification. Laura now works with individual gym members to teach them about nutrition and to help them create personalized nutrition plans. She is passionate about showing members how to fuel their body properly to achieve their health and fitness goals.

Zuzu A. Smith

Zuzu is a competitive Tumble and Trampoline gymnast and has earned four straight National Champion titles in Tumbling. She has also earned several awards for Trampoline as well. She traveled to Russia and Japan to compete on behalf of the United States in Tumbling. She is currently training at Twiststars Gym. She has been doing CrossFit since she was 11 years old after her first broken ankle. She found thru her training she was able to transition right back into her sport and compete at a high level due to the work and effort she put in at CrossFit and 219 Elite Sport Training. Zuzu caught the training bug and began to help coach classes a year ago and took the CrossFit L1 class but was unable to be certified due to her age. She hopes to become certified when she turns 17 and one day coach full time as well as she would like to attend college at Purdue and become a Sports Psychologist. She has three sisters, she loves art and excels in math! She loves to train and work with our youth athletic program.

Tyler Campos

I grew up in East Chicago and moved to Highland in High School. I started working out to lose weight and successfully lost 80+ pounds in my journey. I found CrossFit through YouTube and quickly fell in love with the competitive nature of it. CrossFit has become my passion and I plan on getting better day by day. I love the nature of CrossFit because your results are what you put into it. My favorite quote is “Hard Work Pays Off”. The community at CrossFit 219 has been the driving factor on why I show up everyday. I am currently working towards getting my CrossFit L1 at the moment. When I’m not doing Crossfit, I play baseball to help satisfy that competitive nature of mine.
